- NOTES: John Flack mentioned in the settlement of father John Flacks estate.

NOTES: Many Websites show John being born in 1774 and even a Family Data Sheet in Ancestry.com shows that too. But if he was born in 1774 then he would have to be a child of father Johns 1st marriage to Jane Porter.
But after father Johns death when his estate was being settled, specific mention is made of his 2 eldest sons by his 1st marriage (Andrew and George) and the other 2 sons (John and William) by his second marriage to Mary (McMurry).
Now George Porter Flack (last son by 1st marriage) was born in 1778 and William Flack (last son by 2nd marriage) was born abt 1783. So by deduction - John Flack was born sometime between 1778 and 1783 - my estimate is abt 1781 (not 1774 as the Ancestry data sheets suggests).
Even the oft quoted book 'Pioneer families of Randolph and Perry Counties, Illinois' by Dr Robert Crawford Robertson skips over the subject of who Johns mother was (he just names his father).
It is my opion therefore that Mary McMurray is the mother of John Flack here and John was born abt 1781 (not 1774) - otherwise the 'settlement of the will' makes no sense.

NOTES: For quite some time I had John married to Sarah Milligan and moving to Illinois. However, my re-estimated birth date of 1781 for John didnt fit well at all with the (early) birth dates of some of his children.
I have just been re-reading some reference material and I am now convinced that John Flack (and Sarah Milligan) IS NOT the son of John Flack / Mary McMurray - see book extract below.

"........ But I cannot resist noting that my examination of the records of the second generation ( *while examining the settlement of the Estate of John Flack {1751-1792} *) has led me to an important correction to Flack genealogy.
It has been the contention of a number of researchers (perhaps traceable to Dr Robertson) that John Flack Jr, the son of John Flack by his second wife Mary, left Rutherford and settled in Perry County ca. 1800. I can say in near certainty that John Flack of Perry County, Illinois, was not the son of John Flack of Rutherford.
The John Flack that went to Illinois from Iredell County was the son of Michael Flack.
John and Michael Flack were among the early settlers of the Stony Point area, located near the present day Alexander County-Iredell County line, and where they owned tracts adjacent to a Fergus Milligan. The wife of John Flack was Sarah Milligan.
The parentage of John Flack is established by a land claim made by him in 1792. In that year he entered land in Iredell County; however the land had still not been surveyed some seven years later and in December 1799, he assigned the claim to his father. On the back of a warrant for this survey can be found the following:
" I John Flack do by these present assign over to my father Michael Flack all my title and claim to the within warrant for the value received. Witness my hand and seal the 5th of December 1799 - John Flack seal / Test Wm. Sharp."
